'...the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things unseen.'
Collection of work from the last year or so.
Thomas Merton, the American Trappist Monk, aptly sums up the ‘hamster wheel’ existence that has framed much of the human condition since the fall. There seems to be a constant temptation to be climbing temporal ladders whether it’s a career ladder, a financial ladder, an approval ladder or even a ministry ladder. It was this idea of rejecting the temptations of building our own personal ‘Towers of Babel’ that influenced much of the thinking behind the creativity in our 2014 Vision presentation.
With the theme ‘Pioneer Again’ it’s easy to default to the image of some Lone Ranger figure branching out on their own, facing down the elements in order to attain personal glory. Instead we wanted to communicate the image of the selfless pioneer whose motivation was to make a way for others rather than simply placing their own personal flag atop some lofty peak.
Jesus Christ is our most obvious example of the selfless pioneer. In Christ we see the ultimate trailblazer, leaving His privileged heavenly position, the Word becoming flesh and blood and moving into the neighbourhood, as the Message version of John’s Gospel puts it. Jesus pioneers a journey into “the badlands” of humanity and through his ultimate sacrifice makes a way for the many…this is the pioneer spirit we are challenged to emulate.
In the first film we wanted to incorporate textures of the early days of our church to give a sense of the heritage of where this all started. We filmed abstract reenactments depicting scenes from the early journey of our Senior Pastors Brian and Bobbie. All the films were shot using a combination of RED Epic, Canon DSLR and an old super 8 film camera.
The Pilgrims landed at New Plymouth in 1620, but that was really only the beginning of the story. This promo for the scripted film "Saints and Strangers" tells that whole story. Shot on location in Cape Town, South Africa, we shot with the cast for 3 full days, capturing the tension, uncertainty, and danger of those early moments when each group was sizing up the other.
Centered around the idea of prayers from both Pilgrims and Natives (the Native chant was written and performed by Native American, Jesse Bowman Bruchac), the spot echoes the idea that no matter how different they may have been, their fundamental experience was quite similar. Big thanks to our good friends and brilliant minds at National Geographic and of course to the amazing cast and crew.
